Airbus Introduces PioneerLab

The Game-Changing Twin-Engine Flying Laboratory

Airbus PioneerLab

The German National Aviation Conference was abuzz with excitement as Airbus Helicopters unveiled its latest technological marvel, the PioneerLab. This twin-engine technology demonstrator, built on the H145 platform, is set to revolutionize the helicopter industry with its focus on reducing emissions, increasing autonomy, and integrating bio-based materials.

Tomasz Krysinski, Head of Research and Innovation Programmes at Airbus Helicopters, shared his enthusiasm, stating, "With PioneerLab, we continue our ambitious strategy to test and mature new technologies on board our helicopter demonstrators. PioneerLab, which is based in Germany at our Donauwörth site, will be our platform to test technologies specifically dedicated to twin-engine helicopters."

The PioneerLab aims to demonstrate a fuel reduction of up to 30% compared to a conventional H145. This impressive feat is achieved through a hybrid electric propulsion system and aerodynamic improvements. Additionally, Airbus Helicopters will be testing structural components made from bio-based and recycled materials, striving to reduce the environmental footprint across the entire aircraft life cycle. These new parts are produced using processes designed to minimize material and energy consumption while enhancing recyclability.

Research activities will also focus on integrating the latest digital technologies into the aircraft's flight control system and associated sensors, aiming to increase autonomy and safety during critical flight phases such as take-off and landing.

The project receives partial funding from the BMWK, the Federal German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Actions, through its national research program LuFo. Airbus Helicopters' FlightLabs serve as agile and efficient test beds, enabling the rapid testing of new technologies. These efforts are part of the company's strategy to bring incremental innovation to its current products and to mature technology for future platforms.

The PioneerLab’s flight campaign has already commenced at Airbus's largest German site in Donauwörth, with the first techno-brick being a rotor strike alerting system. The next phase will focus on testing an automated take-off and landing system, further showcasing the capabilities of this advanced demonstrator.
